Eesti tähed domeenides: ä ö ü õ ja Punycode müür

Ausalt öeldes: kui sinu domeenis on Eesti tähed (ä, ö, ü, õ), põrkad Cloudflare’is varem või hiljem probleemini. CNAME-väli keeldub tähte vastu võtmast või kirje ei lahene. Siin on selgitus ja lahendus, mis reaalselt toimib.

DNS mõistab ainult ASCII-d

DNS süsteem loodi 1980ndatel ja tunneb domeenides ainult ASCII tähti, numbreid ja sidekriipse. “ö” tähte võrgus ei eksisteeri. Rahvusvahelised domeeninimed (IDN) lahendavad selle Punycode abil: eriline kodeering, mis muudab eritähtedega nime xn-- algusega kujuks. Täpse stringi genereerib sulle registripidaja — ära proovi seda käsitsi arvutada.

Kus see probleeme tekitab

• Cloudflare DNS / CNAME: sa ei saa sisestada üks.ee otse. Kasutajaliides kas lükkab tagasi või salvestab kirje, mis ei toimi.
• Kohandatud e-posti domeenid: Gmail (“Send mail as”) ja Cloudflare Email Routing võivad samuti Unicode kujuga hätta jääda.
• Sertifikaadid / TXT kontrollid: sama lugu — ainult ASCII.

Lahendus

1. Võta oma registripidaja halduspaneelist domeeni Punycode (xn--) kuju (seda näidatakse inimsõbraliku nime kõrval).
2. Kasuta seda xn--...ee stringi kõikjal Cloudflare’is: CNAME sihtmärgid, hostinimed ja e-posti suunamine.
3. Hoia ilus äöüõ.ee inimeste jaoks (veebiaadress, visiitkaardid); masinad saavad xn-- versiooni.

Miks see tasuta stacki puhul oluline on

See ei maksa midagi — see on lihtsalt viiemutine tõlkesamm. Kuid see on täpselt selline nähtamatu takistus, mis paneb inimesed alla andma ja maksma registripidajale 5€/kuu “e-posti majutuse” eest, mida nad tegelikult ei vaja. Tunne Punycoded ja .ee domeen püsib algusest lõpuni tasuta.

Real talk: if your domain has Estonian characters (ä, ö, ü, õ), you will eventually hit a wall the moment you paste it into Cloudflare. The CNAME field rejects the letter, or the record silently fails to resolve. Here is what is happening and the fix that actually works.

DNS only speaks ASCII

The DNS system was designed in the 1980s and only understands ASCII letters, digits, and hyphens in domain labels. There is no “ö” on the wire. Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) solve this with Punycode: a special encoding that turns a name with special characters into an xn-- form. The exact string is generated for you by your registrar — never try to type it by hand.

Where it bites

• Cloudflare DNS / CNAME: you cannot enter üks.ee directly. The UI either rejects it or saves a record that never resolves.
• Custom email domains: Gmail’s “Send mail as” and Cloudflare Email Routing can also choke on the Unicode form in certain fields.
• Certificates / TXT challenges: same story — ASCII only.

The fix

1. Get the Punycode (xn--) form of your domain from your registrar’s dashboard (they show it next to the human-readable name).
2. Use that xn--...ee string everywhere in Cloudflare: CNAME targets, hostnames, and email routing.
3. Keep the pretty äöüõ.ee for humans (your site URL, business cards); machines get the xn-- version.

Why this matters for the free stack

None of this costs money — it is just a five-minute translation step. But it is exactly the kind of silent failure that makes people give up and pay a registrar 5€/month for “email hosting” they do not need. Know Punycode, and the .ee domain stays free end to end.
